Chapter 12

“Come on, Meatball, we don’t have much time.” I hurried along the gravel path early the next morning.

I’d planned to meet Alice at the shooting range to test the theory that Professor Stephen could have shot Ben.

Meatball’s ears pricked and his tail lifted before he dashed into the trees. A few moments later, I heard a familiar giggle.

Alice emerged from the trees, Meatball cradled in her arms like he was a giant furry baby, his pink tongue poking out of his mouth and his tail whipping from side to side.

“Thanks for coming out so early,” I said.

Alice set Meatball on the ground before patting his head. “I never turn down the opportunity to shoot. And if this helps us figure out who killed Ben, so much the better. I can always have a nap later.”

After my conversation with Johann, I’d given Alice an update about what I’d learned. She was more than happy to help me test my theory.

“I thought we could use sandbags to represent Ben.” I walked beside Alice toward the shooting range. “We’ll set them up in the spot he was in when he was shot. Then you go behind the shooting range and see if you can hit the sandbags from that distance.”

“That won’t be a problem. You give me a target, and I’ll hit it.” She pursed her lips. “I can’t believe you think Professor Stephen could be involved, though. Everyone is in awe of him, you included.”

“I’d as good as ruled him out. But after my conversation with Johann, it got me thinking. What if Professor Stephen felt threatened by Ben’s cleverness? Ben was in his final year of study, so would have been applying for jobs. Perhaps Professor Stephen saw him as too big a threat and needed to get him out the way.”

“Professor Stephen is a history nerd, not a killer.”

“There’s nothing nerdy about history,” I said. “It’s a fascinating topic. And I know you enjoy it. You’re always going on about your family tree.”

“Yes, that’s because my family is fascinating,” she said. “The other night, I was researching a relative who helped invent eyeglasses.”

“I thought the first spectacles were invented in Florence?”

“I have ancestors all over the world. And I didn’t say he invented them, I said he helped.” She sniffed and strode ahead.

I shrugged. “Fair enough. You have fabulously talented ancestors.”

She grinned over her shoulder at me. “I do. Which reminds me, your family tree is long overdue. We’re getting that done. I want to know all about you. After all, you’re my best friend. We don’t have any secrets from each other.”

I glanced at her before looking away. My family had a few secrets, and I didn’t want to share them with Alice. I didn’t need her to think badly about me because of my somewhat dubious family.

“We’ll get around to it,” I said. “Right now, we have a murder mystery to figure out. Let’s get a move on. I don’t want anyone to see what we’re doing.”

“By anyone, you mean Campbell,” Alice said.
